Opals are classed as a mineraloid and are created in fissures of any kind of rock. The iridescence of colour is created by microscopic silica spheres within the Opal in a hexagonal or cubic lattice. An optical effect of light diffracting from these spheres produces the colours seen. The more iridescence seen, generally the more valuable the Opal.
Historically Opals were considered unlucky but In the 20th century Opals were redeemed and considered to possess all the virtues of each gemstone whose colour was represented in the Opal. Opals were rare and very valuable until a vast deposit in Australia was found in the 19th century.
The Andean Opal comes from the Andes mountain in Peru and is considered to be wonderfully soothing for children and animals and adults overwhelmed by life. It is particularly useful for healing emotional wounds bringing an inner peace.
The Andean Opals on this box have come from a recently re opened mine in Peru.
Opal is considered to be the birthstone for people born in October.
