Amethyst is a quartz and was used as a gemstone by the ancient Egyptians. Medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets in the belief it offered protection in battle and the belief that Amethyst provided healing properties .

Until the 18th century Amethyst was included among the most valuable gemstones (diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald) however extensive deposits have since been found which has reduced its value and is now classed as a semi precious stone.

Amethyst crystals are still believed to help alleviate stress, helping to sooth the mind and emotions.  It is used in meditation to help inspire an enhanced meditative state.
